Fractured River Ice by deanspic on Flickr.Fractured River Ice
As water freezes it expands and breaks occur on the surface of river ice. The ice thickness here is about six inches thick, enough to support the weight of a car. When these cracks form they do so with a loud and palpable thump, often muffled by covering snow. It’s a bit unnerving when they occur underfoot like this one. Occasionally, depending on the size of the crack or fissure, water will be forced up, or even a section of ice will be pushed up into a ridge. The best example of this occur in tidal rivers in northern Canada, like the Moose or Albany, that drain into James Bay.
In case your wondering about the texture of the snow to the upper left, it was mottled by water that sprayed up and out of this crack.
